A Family Session

This session was such a joy to photograph. It had all the elements needed to create a beautiful session- golden sunlight, beautiful greens, perfect outfits, a smiley little babe, and a family so clearly in love. I hope you enjoy browsing a few of my favorite images of the Scott family.

A Maternity Session

You know how some couples are just meant to be parents? The ones that always play and interact with every child they see. The ones that all their nieces, nephews, and friends kids just absolutely adore. That’s Michelle and Jack. They are going to be two of the best parents out there and their sweet baby Brady is one lucky little guy to have them. It was such an honor to document this special time as their family grows and I can’t wait to continue it with their newborn session in a few short weeks.

A Newborn Session

Newborn lifestyle sessions are my most favorite sessions to photograph. I love capturing those tender moments between families as they welcome home a new baby. The love, the connection, the snuggles… it truly doesn’t get any better than that and I am just so grateful to my wonderful clients who trust me with the task of documenting such a special time for them. The honor is not lost on me.

Here are a few images from my time with the Keener family. Enjoy!

A Maternity Session

It’s always an honor when a fellow photographer asks you to capture a special time in their family’s life, especially when it’s a photographer whose work you have admired for quite some time. Kelli, from Kelli Seeley Photography , and her husband Ryan are expecting their fifth little one in just a few months. They opted to do a maternity session, just the two of them, and I just love that idea! These photographs will forever be treasured by the little girl in her mamas belly.

My Journey into Film

I’ve always admired film photographers and their work. Their images always coming out with the creaminess of skin tones, the most beautiful greens, and some seriously gorgeous pinks. They have a softness about them that are unmatched. The light reflected just right in every single image they produce. They are able to catch the most organic and raw moments during each session by being intention with each shutter click. Something that I just never thought I would be able to teach myself.

In fact, I never thought I would venture into film photography at all until three of my best photog friends encouraged me to jump in and try it, after listening to me complain on several different occasions that I felt like I was stuck in a creative rut. I went back and forth with myself for what seemed like ages. Overall, there were many reasons that kept me from adding this medium to my repertoire. A few of those included not being able to shoot in low-light situations and still match the style of photography that I love, not being able to see the back of my camera to make sure my camera settings are correct, the extra time it would take me to learn a whole new area of photography, and mostly, the inability to click my shutter a couple hundred times during a shoot until I get just the right shot of your squirrelly little toddlers that I have the pleasure of shooting. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love those soft, slightly blurred images just as much as anyone else but I also love the in focus, everyone looking at the camera smiling ones too. Those images just aren’t always possible when shooting film exclusively, especially with my littlest clients. But what is possible and just so, so good with film is the way it forces me to slow down and be conscious with every image I take. It forces me into a different zone of creativity that I don’t feel when I shoot digital. It gives me a nervous, excited feeling every time I pull out my Pentax. And, the best part, it pushes me to learn new editing tricks so I can seamlessly match my digital and film images. I truly feel learning film these past few weeks have made me a better photographer. I have still have so much to learn and so much practice to do but for now I am happy with my decision to become a hybrid photographer. I’m not sure when and where film will take me but for now, I am enjoying the ride.

A huge thank you to this sweet mama and her boys for letting me shoot my very first roll of film in their beautiful home. I will forever treasure this session.

A Studio Session

I’ve known Michelle since I was in middle school. That was sixteen years ago. My how time flies! It was such an honor to be able to capture this special time for her. We had Starbucks, she got to see my own two boys, we caught up on all things pregnancy and life related, and also took some of my most favorite photographs to date. It was a relaxing, quiet, and perfect Sunday morning. Just how all Sunday mornings should be.

A Family Affair in Shaver Lake, CA

I didn’t start taking pictures in hopes of becoming a professional photographer. The career just kind of landed in my lap, like the best ones do. After having my first son, Henry, my husband bought me a little camera so I could document his every move. After hours at our local camera store learning all about my new little camera’s settings I went home and instantly started shooting pictures of my little family. It didn’t take long before the obsession began. I started to immerse myself in all things photography, watching hundreds of youtube videos and reading blogs upon blogs about photographing in the best light and posing families in authentic and intimate ways. My little family quickly became tired of being my photography subjects every day so I started to recruit friends and family. They always showed up and did every crazy thing I asked of them and I am forever thankful for them (you guys know who you are!). Then the inquiries started rolling and before I knew it, Lavender Fig Photography had begun. At the time, I continued what I called my “real job”, teaching special education, something that I absolutely adored as well. It wasn’t until my second son, Hayes, came that I decided (after hours and hours and hours of discussion with God, my husband, friends, family, and pretty much anyone that would listen to me ramble on about the subject) that I wanted to stay home and raise my babies the best that I could and pursue this little photography business I had going.

Slowly but surely things started to fall into place and I got to a point where I needed a website, which brings me to this, writing to you right now. I had a dear friend from Idaho, Hannah from Hannah Mann Photography, design my website for me. She also told me that I needed to start blogging as a way to reach my clients and to show some of my most favorite shoots. So, here we are.. a BLOG!!

It wasn’t hard for me to decide on which session I wanted to start my blog off with. Shaver Lake is one of those places that I grew up visiting every single summer, usually multiple times in a year. So when I knew the Eslick family was dying to do a shoot in the mountains I knew exactly where to take them. The light, the pine trees, the gorgeous field, the lake.. I could go on and on but I don’t think I need to. The images speak for themselves. Take a look for yourself and you will see one beautiful family, drenched in some beautiful light, in one of the most picture perfect places!
